Gornji Grad and Kaptol (2 hrs)

When you are in Zagreb, of course you have to walk around the old centre: Gornji Grad and Kaptol, also called Upper Town. Stroll through these wonderful small streets and enjoy the beauty of the old (restored) architecture.

From Gornji Grad you get the best views on the city from the Tower of Lotrscak. Other wonderful places not to miss are the Church of St Mark at Markov Trg and the Stone gate.

In Kaptol you have to visit the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Dolac Market.

As the old town is located on a hill you’ll have to climb. If you don’t want to do that (or can’t), you could take an old funicular in Tomiceva Street. Every ten minutes this elevator will bring you up or down in just 55 seconds.

Museum of broken relationships (1 hr)

In the heart of the old town you will find one the most awkward museums. The Museum of Broken Relationships is a museum dedicated to failed love relationships. Its exhibits include personal objects left over from former lovers, accompanied by brief descriptions.

It began as a travelling collection of donated items. In 2010 the museum has found a permanent location in Zagreb. The Museum offers a chance to overcome an emotional collapse through creation: by contributing to the Museum’s collection.

The museum is located at Ćirilometodska Ulica 2. The opening hours are daily from 9 am to 9 pm (during summer it is open until 10:30 pm). The admission is 25 Kuna.

Botanical garden (1-2 hrs)

Zagreb has many beautiful parks, but in summer it’s is a must to visit the Botanical garden, which is located in the centre of Zagreb, just one tram station from the Central Railway Station, or a 10-minute walk from the main square (The Jelacic Square).

Public entrances are located along the northern side of the garden, from the Mihanoviceva Street (at the end of Gundulićeva St.). The entrance is free.

The Garden is open to public from 1 April to 1 November, on all holidays except Assumption day (August 15) and Easter. The opening hours are Monday to Tuesday from 9 am to 2:30 pm and on Wednesday to Sunday from 9 am to 7 pm, unfortunately it is closed during winter.

National Theatre (1-3 hrs)

Zagreb enjoys a rich cultural life. The Croatian National Theatre is the national home of ballet, opera and drama. It is located on Marshal Tito Square in Zagreb's Lower Town.

This gorgeous building opened in 1895 and is definitely worth a visit.
If you like buy a ticket for a concert or performance you can do this online. This website offers a beautiful virtual tour as well. Unfortunately there are no real tours through the theatre.

Plitvice Lakes National Park (1-2 days)

The most beautiful natural scenery in Croatia can be seen in Plitvice National Park. It is situated in the mountainous area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The national park is world famous for its lakes arranged in cascades. The lakes are all interconnected and follow the water flow. They are renowned for their distinctive colours, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. The colours change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight.

You can rent a car in Zagreb and in less then two hours you can drive to this Unesco World Heritage site. You can get your directions here.

The park is open daily from 7 am to 8 pm. The entrance fee is 110 Kuna per person per day or 180 for two days.

There are two entrances, simply called number 1 and number 2. Number 1 is the nearest to the biggest waterfalls.

Take entrance 2 if you have more time and like to make a full round through the park. Take boat from P1 to P2 and make a walk around the smaller falls first. Then take a boat to P3 and walk along the viewing points back to station 2 and take a train back to parking 2.

Go to the beach: Krk (1 day – 1 week)

If you had enough of the heat in the city during summer, make a trip to the coast. Krk is the nearest island to Zagreb, located near Rijeka. It is the largest island in the northern Adriatic Sea.

Rent a car in Zagreb and in approximately 2½ hours you’ll be there. A bridge links the island to the mainland. If you want to fly to Krk, Rijeka airport is actually located on Krk Island. There are several car rental companies located at the airport.

You can just drive around the island, have a look at the villages, see which one you like the most and try to find an apartment there. You’ll see signs mentioning ‘Apartmani’ everywhere.

Krk is a perfect place to unwind. Enjoy the dazzling beauty of the crystal clear waters, white rocks and lush vegetation.

And if you like to do some sightseeing, Krk is the most populous Adriatic island, with numerous towns and villages. Some really nice ones are: Krk Town and Malinska. And an afternoon or evening in Rijeka is a good option as well.
